September - October Land of Discovery

Re-enactment of the Battle of Nafpaktos (Battle of Lepanto)

A spectacular sight awaits anyone who is lucky enough to visit the picturesque town of Nafpaktos in early October as they have the opportunity to enjoy the re-enactment of one of the most important naval battles of all time!

This battle re-enactment and the celebrations that accompany it are organized every year in honour of this historic battle.

The battle, which took place on October 7 1571 in the area around Nafpaktos, saw the Christian states of the West fighting the Ottoman Empire. The battle ended that same day and became historically significant both because of the number of vessels involved and the tactics used to help the Western forces to victory.

The cellbrations for the anniversary of the battle usually start in September and include painting and photography exhibitions, road races, lectures on the battle, concerts and traditional dances. The festivities culminate in early October with the battle re-enactment when you can enjoy a unique spectacle with sailing ships, traditional medieval costumes, fireworks and music that will transport you to that historic night in Nafpaktos in 1571.
