A surprise around every headland

Wonderful craggy coast, scenic seaside villages, a bite to eat and a swig of ouzo in lovely harbours.

The long latticework coastline bejeweled with golden sands and pretty coves adds the finishing touches to a colourful mosaic of verdant mountains, lakes and rivers draped across the region. The Land of Discovery promises an unforgettable summer in its sapphire waters and picturesque hamlets.

Amfilochia

Like an amphitheatre whose stage is the sea, sparkling at dusk as if it were full of stars, Amfilochia will always find its way to your heart. Against a gorgeous natural backdrop, it holds a plethora of options for your enjoyment. Make a day of it on one of its beaches and take a trip to the nearby sights, such as the traditional hamlet of Menidi and the Holy Monastery of Aretha, the most sacred pilgrimage of the area.

Palairos

Seaside Palairos seamlessly blends traditional elements with the comforts of a modern summer destination. Your selection of beaches; Potamaki, Pogonia, Agios Ioannis or Varko? Sandy or pebbly? The choice is yours.

Mytikas

A village quite literally at the water’s edge, it lends itself to calm holidays in the turquoise hues of the Ionian. Known until recently only to yacht owners, there’s still time to make it your own little secret destination. The two beaches on either side of its headland, one with white sand and the other with pebbles, will entice you into the crystalline waters of the Ionian infinity. Just before Mytikas lies Paliovarka, a beautiful small beach with particularly fine pebbles.

Kryoneri

Named after the springs which gush from the earth near the estuary of Evinos and make the waters of the area cooler.  Rising straight up from the beach, the mountain of Varasova inspires awe in all who stand before its looming presence. Kavourotrypa with its black and white pebbles is a dreamy spot for children, while outside Kryoneri, Limnopoula, with wonderfully soft sand and limpid waters, is just made for a quiet, safe swim. While you are in the area, a visit to the 10th century Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a fascinating and uplifting experience.

Astakos

Astakos

A seaside town flirting with the Ionian islands, it sprawls down the hillside towards its sheltered harbor, which fills to the brim with yachts and sailing boats in the summer. The central beach of Astakos and the sea shore of Goulia beckon you into the water. On the way to Mytikas you will find the beaches of Vela and Agrilia, where you can pitch a tent on an inviting campsite should the fancy take you. Learn more

Vonitsa

Vonitsa

Built on the coast of the Amvrakikos Gulf and overlooked by a Venetian castle upon its pine covered hill, the mild summertime pace and the island character will be a pleasant surprise. Koukoumitsa, the lush islet east of the harbor is a little paradise. The beautiful beach there, as well as the ones of Metamorphosi, Panagia and others, will offer you cooling dives in an idyllic setting. In the surrounding area, visit the mountain village Thyrio with its archaeological collection, the seafront castle of Aktio and the thermal baths of Tryfos, where the visitor combines hydrotherapy with spiritual tranquility.

Gastronomical delights

In all the seaside destinations of the Land of Discovery, you will sample delicious dishes, all composed of wholesome local ingredients, such as the famous Amvrakikos shrimp, known in these parts as gabari, tasty meat and, last but most definitely not least, the cheese and other dairy products of Amfilochia.
