Known as one of Greece’s largest rivers and the most important in the Peloponnese, both in terms of length (110km) and water volume, the river Alfeios flows through Arcadia and Ilia, and is in fact the natural border of the two prefectures for a large part of its route, ending up in a magnificent discharge in the northern part of the Cyparissia Gulf and the Ionian Sea.
Springing from the foot of Mt Taygetus, with its sources in Arcadia’s territory and the Asea plain, along its long route it confluences with rivers, tributaries and torrents, including the rivers Lousios, Ladonas and Erymanthos.
As a provider of wealth and playing a decisive role in people’s lives, it was deified in ancient times and fueled myths, while nowadays it remains equally important, irrigating lands, enlivening ecosystems and having a positive impact on the local economy, tourism and the social realm.
