Description

The Kastraki Lake, north of the town of Agrinio, is an artificial creation similar to its neighbouring lakes of Stratos and Kremastos.

Built on the bed of the Acheloos river, it is mainly fed by the river’s waters but also by those of its tributary Inachos, and occupies a surface area extending over 28sqkm. The artificial lake makes a decisive contribution to the area, as it supplies water to more than 150,000 inhabitants. However, its main contribution is power generation, in addition to its irrigation role.

The lake’s dam, close to the homonymous village of Kastraki, is an impressive construction of a height of 95m and a length of 530m, while its thickness at the base, where the hydroelectric station is located, is 380m. The dam was built in 1969 and it was its construction that created the artificial, which, although a product of human intervention, is of remarkable biodiversity and in perfect harmony with the environment.
