The Monastery of Skafidia is the oldest monastery in Elis. It is said to have been built during the Byzantine period. It is surrounded by an impressive medieval fortress and it is only a few kilometers away from the idyllic Skafidia beach.
It is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and, like most of the region’s monasteries, carries an important history. The most popular one says that the construction of the church was decided upon when some locals found the icon of the Virgin Mary in the sea, inside a trough.
Inside the church, there are preserved frescoes dating back to the 1700s, while the monastery also has a large and important archive, a library, and a museum of rare relics.
The monastery, which is a convent, is celebrated with great splendor every summer on August 15.
