Description

A water state, the built-up and captivating town of Aitoliko– essentially an island territory, also known as the “Little Venice” of Greece – is a jewel of Aitoloakarnania. Situated 10km northwest of Messolonghi, connected to the mainland by two stone, multi-arched bridges declared as classified, Aitoliko used to be a small island complex that evolved into a single island through spatial planning projects, eventually obtaining its current form following continuous embankments.
Aitoliko, formerly called Anatolikon, hence its current name, lies in the center of the lagoon, amidst an extensive habitat surrounded by important flora and fauna. A fishing spot of known value and a great maritime tradition, Aitoliko is an excellent destination to visit.
Highlights in this wonderful ‘water city’ of Western Greece include the seaside palm tree-lined street for carefree strolling; the famous museum -unique in Europe- of purely engraving art, Vasso Katraki; the famous Agiagathi feast; and, the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, where the trial of 1821 Greek revolution hero Georgios Karaiskakis was held. In addition to numerous fine fish taverns, Aitoliko visitors will surely enjoy the unique sunsets.
