Description

The Temple of Zeus at Olympia was one of the most important ancient Greek temples. It was built by the architect Livonas, on the model of the fully developed classical Greek temple, in Doric style.

It is located within the area of the sacred Altis, in Ancient Olympia, and on its impressive pediments (which are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Olympia), the chariot race of Pelops and Oenomaus is depicted, and in the west, there is the Centaur battle with Theseus.

At the bottom of the Temple, there was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the gold ivory Statue of Zeus, the artwork of Pheidias, which unfortunately has not survived.
