Situated near the homonymous cape and being a seaport of Pyrgos, at a distance of 13km from it, Katakolo has always been an area of strategic importance, while it emerged as a cutting-edge port in the period when raisins were the most important export product of the then newly formed modern Greek state.
Nowadays, the artificial port of Katakolo, upgraded and modernized, plays an important role in the country's tourism scene.
Receiving hundreds of cruise ships on an annual basis, it welcomes hordes of passengers, heading mainly to the sights of Ancient Olympia but also the wider area.
With a strong development outlook and infrastructure that supports huge and ultra-modern ships, Katakolo has achieved to be a key factor on the domestic and Mediterranean tourist map.
Enjoying ever-increasing traffic, it ensures partnerships with giant companies active in the cruise field, and in recent years has been permanently included in the top ports of Greece, beating very popular destinations around the country. The port is a key driver of economic revival of Western Greece and the Peloponnese. The harbor’s lighthouse was built in 1865 and is a listed historical monument.
