A proud, well-preserved and masterful example of fortress architecture, the castle of Nafpaktos embraces the city and rightfully ranks among the country’s most important fortified monuments.
Overlooking the city from an altitude of about 200m, on top of a pyramidal hill, with its majestic ramparts, the castle bears two descending arms, adjusted to the slope of the ground, one to the east and the other to the west, gradually narrowing and enclosing the harbor entrance with two towers.
Structurally and spatially remarkable are the four transverse walls, joining those two arms and forming five tiers from the top of the hill to the sea, essentially creating smaller independent defensive fortresses within the great fortress.
Its current form is the result of adjustments by the Venetians, although its fortifications experienced many construction phases from antiquity to the Turkish occupation.
Visitors here can admire the acropolis, the distinct harbor-castle, the circular and square towers, the bastions and the walls, which are mainly preserved at their original height, as well as the fact that the castle is so charmingly integrated into the life of the city.
