Among the hidden treasures of mountainous Achaia, Planitero, 25km south of Kalavryta, is a village of incomparable beauty boasting an amazing forest.
Situated at an altitude of 700m and in an amphitheatrical layout, it is part of the wider Natura 2000 area of Mount Helmos and Stygos Waters, with Mount Helmos watching over and embracing it, as it brims with greenery and water.
This place is where the Aroanios river is sourced, amidst one of Greece’s most magnificent plane tree forests. A matchless landscape brimming with century-old, huge plane trees – some of which have a trunk diameter of up to 4m, the area also features water mills reminding visitors of the dynamics of nature, and scattered trout farms feeding gastronomic experiences.
Planitero is also a starting point for hiking routes and mountain trails, featuring a simple and environmentally friendly tourism infrastructure. The village lies just 7km away from the well-known Cave of the Lakes, another rare creation of mother nature that fascinates with its layered and successive lakes, amidst an incredible scenery created by stalactites and stalagmites.
