Among the most familiar, crowded and beloved squares in Patras, Psila Alonia is located in the heart of the Achaean capital and is the center of a homonymous historic district and a magnet for young and old alike.
Surrounded by trees and bustling with life owing to the concentration of many commercial stores and catering venues, it dominates an elevated plateau, south of the well-known Gounari St.
Formerly a district of holiday homes owned by the city’s wealthy, it is now a nucleus of intense social life. It was built during the mayorship of Benizelos Roufos, in 1882. Its current name comes from its location and use as a threshing floor, located even higher than the local vineyards.
An imposing bronze statue of the legendary prelate and revolutionary Palaion Patron Germanos, and the marble bust of eminent poet Kostis Palamas adorn the square, proudly gazing at passers-by.
Attractions also include the sundial, installed in the square in 1953 and now a symbol and meeting point, as well as the Golfinopoulos Mansion, considered by many to be the most beautiful house in Patras.
A fountain and a playground are also housed on its borders, while the Stairs of the Three Admirals are a link to another square and the lower part of the town.
