Description

Classified as a historical monument, well preserved and among the oldest towers in the mountainous part of the Peloponnese, the Petmezas family tower is located in the settlement of Kato Lousoi, 12km southeast of Kalavryta, and is a fine example of a fortified residence.
Its construction on an elevated, strategic and prestigious location dates back to the 17th century, and its distinct features include the several battlements and the curvature of the southeast tower and the northwest watchtower. Built with particular care, in a simple and strict style, with grey stone from the same region, it boasted masterful details, such as the distinctly machined cornerstones.
This stately tower house, unique in terms of its arrangement and form, has been a place of battles, a residence of fighters and a center of resistance against the Turks before and after the 1821 revolution, owned by the Petmezas family. They, fleeing their place of origin, Epirus, after the persecutions they suffered, took refuge here, having as their base the specific defence structure.
Today, this folk architecture, recently restored and statically reinforced, remains privately owned and is now inhabited by Antonis Petmezeios, a descendant of a family whose members have been prominent personalities in many fields, and with a strong social presence and activity.
