Description

The impressive church of Zoodochos Pigi, better known as Panagia Tripiti, on the beachfront of the city of Aigio, is considered a pilgrimage and religious destination of pan-Hellenic scope.
The neoclassical, two-storey building, with its external form reminiscent of that of Panagia of Tinos, was carved into a steep rock inside a cave, hence its other name, and is said to have been founded in the middle of the 16th century. According to tradition, the church was built after a castaway saw a light and a sign of hope, was driven there with all his strength and discovered the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave.
Having taken its current form during the 19th century, the temple has an evocative grandeur, featuring a Renaissance-style marble staircase of 150 steps, well-tended gardens and impressive fountains in the courtyard, as well as the dense cypress trees that surround it.
At the entrance of the church, a cruciform fountain pours holy water into a marble basin. Inside, the church is dominated by the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, a rare icon of Saint George depicted on foot, not on horseback, 19th-century hagiographies and excellent wood-carved decoration.
The church celebrates on Bright Friday, with the holy icon paraded through the city streets with great honors.
